Extreme UV radiation in Bahia, Brazil

Overview

The Institute of Environment and Water Resources (Inema) has issued warnings regarding very high to extreme ultraviolet (UV) radiation levels across the state of Bahia, Brazil.

Initial reports indicated that Salvador reached a UV index of 10, while several interior cities, including Feira de Santana, Paulo Afonso, Senhor do Bonfim, Juazeiro, and Remanso, were projected to reach an extreme index of 11. These conditions were attributed to dry weather, minimal cloud cover, and the approaching spring equinox.

Subsequent forecasts show radiation levels remaining extreme, with Salvador and Feira de Santana expected to maintain indices between 10 and 11. Other regions, such as Morro do Chapéu, Paulo Afonso, Juazeiro, Remanso, and Senhor do Bonfim, may see the index reach a maximum of 12. Health officials have advised precautions such as using sunscreen and wearing protective clothing, noting that up to 80% of UV radiation can penetrate cloud cover.
