Bahia introduces women‑only bus line in Itabuna and metro carriage in Salvador

The municipality of Itabuna inaugurated the "Linha Lilás" on 28 March, creating Bahia’s first women‑only city‑bus service. The line runs daily from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., covering several neighborhoods and is coordinated by the city’s Secretariat for Women’s Policies in partnership with the Transport Secretariat and Atlântico Transportes. The initiative, part of the city’s 116‑year emancipation celebrations, aims to improve safety after studies indicated that 97 % of women have experienced harassment on public transport.

Starting 3 April, the Salvador metro will operate a women‑only carriage during peak hours (6 a.m.–9 a.m. and 5 p.m.–8 p.m.) on weekdays. The measure is a component of the state’s "Agosto Lilás" campaign, which also provides dedicated support rooms (“Salas Elas à Frente”) and mobile units from the police and social services. The program is delivered in partnership with CCR Metrô Bahia and includes cultural performances by Afro‑Indigenous groups.
