Brazil women‑only public transport

Overview

In early July 2026 Fortaleza’s metro began operating women‑only cars on Line South, the city’s first gender‑segregated public‑transport service.

Later that month Bahia expanded the model. The municipality of Itabuna inaugurated the “Linha Lilás” women‑only bus line on 28 March. The line runs daily from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., linking several neighbourhoods and is coordinated by the city’s Secretariat for Women’s Policies, the Transport Secretariat and Atlântico Transportes. The launch, part of the state’s 116‑year emancipation celebrations, follows a study showing that 97 % of women have experienced harassment on public transport.

In Salvador, a women‑only carriage on the metro began operating during peak hours (6 a.m.–9 a.m. and 5 p.m.–8 p.m.) on 3 April as part of the “Agosto Lilás” campaign. The program includes dedicated support rooms (“Salas Elas à Frente”), mobile police and social‑service units, and cultural performances by Afro‑Indigenous groups, delivered in partnership with CCR Metrô Bahia.

From 3 August to 28 August the carriage was further highlighted with external stickers, positioned as the second or third carriage depending on direction, and staffed by security personnel in lilac shirts. Audible announcements and promotional teams guide passengers, mirroring a similar initiative already in place in Rio de Janeiro. All measures are presented as safety actions aimed at reducing harassment and promoting women’s mobility across the region.
