Bahia receives R$ 1.42 million to reinforce water supply
The Government of Bahia and the Brazilian Federal Government have allocated R$ 1.42 million in humanitarian assistance to combat the effects of El Niño. The funds are being distributed directly to several municipalities to reinforce the supply of potable water, specifically targeting rural populations facing water insecurity.
The resources will be used for the rental of water trucks and the purchase of fuel over a 90-day period. Participating municipalities include Condeúba, Jaguarari, Manoel Vitorino, Andaraí, Riachão do Jacuípe, Boa Vista do Tupim, Valente, and Gavião. This initiative complements the National Civil Defense Secretariat’s ‘Operation Carro-Pipa’, which is carried out by the Army, by increasing the ability of local governments to manage water distribution directly.
José Augusto de Castro Tosato, executive coordinator of the Coordination of Monitoring Socio-Productive Inclusion and Sustainability (COPIS) within the Bahia State Civil House, stated that the transfer materializes months of integrated planning between state and federal authorities to respond to drought conditions.
