Bahn cuts train service in Hamburg, Schleswig‑Holstein this summer

Deutsche Bahn is carrying out construction work on bridges and signal installations around Hamburg, scheduled from 14 July to 20 August. The upgrades will force the railway to limit services on several long‑distance and regional routes in Hamburg, Schleswig‑Holstein and the Nordbahn corridor. Trains between Hamburg and Berlin or southern Germany, as well as services to Kiel, Westerland, Itzehoe, Heide, Husum, Niebüll and Westerland, are cancelled or rerouted via alternative stations such as Pinneberg, Bergedorf and Harburg. Replacement buses and altered timetables are being provided.

Schleswig‑Holstein transport minister Claus Ruhe Madsen warned that the works could jeopardise cruise‑tourists travelling to Kiel and called for a “Kreuzfahrt‑Express” train or direct buses between Hamburg’s main station and the Kiel cruise terminal. Michael Körber of DB InfraGO said, “Wir modernisieren die Infrastruktur nicht nacheinander, sondern bewusst in einem Paket.” The railway expects the modernisation to make future operations more reliable.

Local citizen groups have criticised the plan, calling the disruption a “Bahnchaos” and urging better alternatives for passengers.
