Baidoa fighting intensifies as local forces clash with Somali army

Intense fighting has erupted in Baidoa, Somalia, as thousands of fighters loyal to ousted South West State leader Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen launched an assault on the city. The clashes, which involved fighter jets and drones, mark the third major attack in the region within six weeks.

According to local military commanders, the attacking forces used vehicles loaded with explosives and explosive drones to enter the city from multiple directions. The Somali National Army reported that they successfully repelled the attackers, inflicting heavy casualties.

Doctors Without Borders (MSF) reported that the violence has resulted in at least three deaths, including a healthcare worker, and 69 injuries. A health facility was severely damaged, and MSF expressed concern that blocked roads are preventing many wounded individuals from accessing medical care. The United Nations has warned that the ongoing conflict is worsening an already dire humanitarian crisis in the region, causing further displacement and threatening vulnerable populations.
