Overview

Somalia continues to face heightened political and security instability, particularly in Baidoa, the capital of South West State. Recent fierce fighting erupted as federal government troops clashed with militias loyal to ousted leader Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed ‘Laftagareen’. The conflict involves forces supporting the administration of Adan Madobe against Darawish forces loyal to Laftagareen, who reportedly reached the Afar Irdoodka area in the city center.

The clashes have involved heavy weaponry, including vehicles laden with explosives, drones, and fighter jets. A spokesperson for Laftagareen’s forces claimed that Turkey is supporting the federal government with F-16 fighter aircraft, though these allegations of aerial operations have not been independently verified. MSF noted that a health facility was severely damaged and expressed concern that blocked roads are preventing the wounded from accessing medical care. The United Nations has warned that the conflict is worsening a dire humanitarian crisis, causing further displacement and threatening vulnerable populations.
