Bairabi-Sairang railway line transforms Mizoram logistics

One year after its inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the 51.38-km Bairabi-Sairang railway line has significantly transformed the logistics and connectivity landscape of Mizoram. The line connects Bairabi in southern Assam to Sairang, near the state capital of Aizawl, placing the capital on India’s railway map for the first time.

Previously, Mizoram’s difficult terrain made long-distance travel heavily dependent on unreliable and time-consuming road networks. The new rail corridor has expanded mobility, improved access to markets, and enhanced opportunities for tourism and trade. Major long-distance services now link the region to Guwahati, Kolkata, and Delhi, including the Sairang-Anand Vihar Rajdhani Express.

The project is considered a major engineering feat, traversing steep hills, valleys, and gorges. The infrastructure includes 153 bridges—comprising 55 major and 88 minor bridges—and 45 tunnels spanning nearly 16 kilometers. Notably, the tallest bridge in the project reaches 114 meters in height.
