Mizoram infrastructure and connectivity development

Mizoram is undergoing significant infrastructure and economic development aimed at improving regional connectivity and trade. Initial efforts focused on major projects such as the Bairabi-Sairang railway line and a proposed 200 km extension to Zorinpui. This extension is designed to connect with the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project, linking the state to Myanmar’s Sittwe Port.

Following the inauguration of the 51.38-km Bairabi-Sairang railway line, the state’s logistics landscape has been transformed. The line connects Bairabi in southern Assam to Sairang, providing the state capital, Aizawl, with its first direct rail link to the rest of India. This corridor facilitates long-distance services to cities such as Guwahati, Kolkata, and Delhi, reducing the previous heavy reliance on difficult road networks.

The railway project involved extensive engineering, including 45 tunnels and 153 bridges. Alongside these transport advancements, the state has implemented economic initiatives like the Mizoram Bana Kaih (Handholding) Scheme and a Rs 20-crore Venture Capital Fund to support entrepreneurship and local industries.
