Baja California Sur Congress demands action on power outages and high tariffs

The Congress of Baja California Sur has issued a new formal exhortation to federal authorities to address persistent electricity outages and high utility rates in the state. Legislators are calling on President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo to instruct the Ministry of Energy, the National Energy Commission, and the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) to respond to the grievances of local residents.

Deputy Christian Fabrizio del Castillo Miranda noted that previous requests for intervention have gone unanswered. He emphasized that frequent power failures cause economic damage to homes and businesses and pose risks to individuals who rely on electricity for health reasons. The legislature is also seeking a review of excessive billing to establish fairer electricity tariffs for the region.

In response to these issues, federal projects have been mentioned to improve energy infrastructure. These include plans for a green hydrogen plant and large-scale renewable energy projects in Mulegé, as well as solar infrastructure and new power generation and substation investments in Los Cabos.
