Baja California Sur energy infrastructure crisis

The Baja California Sur Congress has repeatedly petitioned the Mexican federal government to address ongoing electricity shortages and infrastructure failures in the state.

Initially, legislators unanimously approved an exhortation to President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, requesting that the Ministry of Energy and the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) intervene to resolve blackouts that had persisted for approximately two months. The state legislature also sought explanations regarding the progress of solar thermal and combined cycle plants in Los Cabos, alongside calls for increased investment to modernize the electrical system.

Following these initial requests, the Congress issued a subsequent formal exhortation, noting that previous calls for intervention had gone unanswered. Legislators expanded their demands to include a review of excessive billing to establish fairer utility tariffs. They emphasized that frequent power failures cause economic damage and create health risks for vulnerable residents. In response to the energy crisis, federal plans involving green hydrogen, large-scale renewable energy in Mulegé, and new power generation and substation investments in Los Cabos have been identified as potential solutions.
