Balance test linked to life expectancy in new study

Researchers in Brazil have identified a potential link between physical balance and life expectancy. A study involving 1,702 participants aged 51 to 75 found that the ability to balance on one leg for ten seconds may serve as an indicator of long-term health.

During the study, participants were asked to stand on one leg with their arms at their sides and eyes looking forward, without holding onto anything. The results showed that every fifth person failed the test. Those who were unable to maintain balance were found to have nearly double the probability of dying within the following ten years compared to those who succeeded.

While the exact biological causes are still being investigated, experts suggest that poor balance and low musculoskeletal fitness may indicate frailty in older adults, which increases the risk of fatal falls. Factors such as age and pre-existing medical conditions also play significant roles in these outcomes.
