Balcony power plant adoption faces technical and administrative hurdles
The adoption of balcony power plants (small-scale solar systems) faces both technical optimization opportunities and administrative hurdles in Germany.
Technically, oversized solar module capacities can improve efficiency. While simplified operation limits feeding 800 watts into the home grid, installing modules with higher peak wattage (such as 1920 Wp) allows the system to maintain that 800-watt output for longer periods, especially during autumn or under suboptimal weather conditions. Combining these systems with battery storage and smart meters can further maximize energy utility.
On a structural level, the implementation of these systems in rental housing remains low. In Hamburg, data indicates that among approximately 140,000 apartments managed by SAGA, only 18 balcony power plants are known to be in use. This represents just 0.0129% of the housing stock. Critics argue this lack of adoption slows the energy transition and prevents low-income tenants from effectively reducing electricity costs through self-generation.
