Developments in solar energy technology and adoption vary across residential and agricultural sectors.

In Germany, the adoption of balcony power plants faces technical and administrative hurdles. While increasing module capacity—such as installing 1920 Wp modules—can help maintain a consistent 800-watt output during suboptimal weather, implementation in rental housing remains extremely low. In Hamburg, only 18 out of approximately 140,000 SAGA-managed apartments utilize these systems, representing just 0.0129% of the housing stock. Critics note this prevents low-income tenants from reducing electricity costs. These compact systems, consisting of modules and an inverter, can be installed on railings, terraces, walls, or carports to reduce grid reliance.

In Poland, research from the Instrat Foundation suggests balcony-mounted photovoltaics are a viable option for apartment dwellers. An 800 W installation on a south-facing balcony could save between 740 and 757 PLN annually, offering a return on investment in just over three years. While east or west-facing balconies produce 20-30% less energy, they still provide significant savings.

In the agricultural sector, researchers at the University of Montpellier in France have identified risks associated with agrivoltaics. Static solar panels can create a “rain curtain” effect, causing soil erosion and localized flooding while leaving areas beneath the panels dry. To mitigate these issues, studies suggest using automated panel angles and algorithms to reduce precipitation unevenness from 2.13 to 0.22, helping to prevent crop loss.
