California bald eagle Jackie died of avian influenza
A necropsy has confirmed that Jackie, a famous bald eagle from Big Bear Lake, California, died due to highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). The eagle, whose life was documented for years via live webcam feeds, passed away in August after a period of declining health.
According to the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, the virus presented in an uncommon way. The infection caused a severe stomach ulcer, which led to persistent internal bleeding, anemia, and bacterial sepsis. Jackie had previously received treatment at the Ojai Raptor Center for various ailments, including anemia, before her death.
While avian influenza is circulating in bird populations across the United States, officials noted that raptors like eagles typically become exposed by contact with infected birds or by consuming infected prey. There is currently no evidence that Jackie’s partner, Shadow, is ill. Jackie’s remains were cremated to prevent further transmission of the virus.
