Memorial and cause of death for bald eagle Jackie

Overview

Jackie, a bald eagle that gained international fame through a 24/7 livestream near Big Bear Lake, California, died in August at age 14.

Following her death, officials determined that a necropsy conducted by the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance revealed she died due to highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). The infection caused severe conditions including chronic stomach ulceration, internal bleeding, anemia, and bacterial sepsis. While Jackie had been receiving treatment for various ailments, including anemia at the Ojai Raptor Center, prior to her death, her remains were cremated to prevent the transmission of the virus. There is no evidence that her partner, Shadow, is ill.

In response to her passing, the Big Bear community and global fans organized the ‘Wings Over Big Bear’ memorial event. This commemoration included a ceremony at Bear Mountain Ski Resort featuring representatives from the U.S. Forest Service and the Yuhaaviatam of San Manuel Nation, alongside wildlife education activities and the unveiling of local artwork.
