Balearic Islands face critical water scarcity and management crises

The Balearic Islands are facing critical water management challenges as drought risks and resource scarcity intensify. In Menorca, data from the Observatori Socioambiental de Menorca (Obsam) reveals that less than 8% of treated wastewater is being reused, a decline driven by salinity issues in purification plants that have hindered irrigation efforts.

Infrastructure delays have exacerbated the situation in Menorca, where desalination plants and connection projects remain incomplete or underutilized. Critics point to a lack of decisive political action regarding water tariffs and consumption limits, noting that aquifers are being depleted while essential infrastructure projects, such as wastewater infiltration pilots, stall.

In Mallorca, the political group Més per Mallorca has criticized the regional government for failing to prepare for drought. The group is calling for immediate measures to limit urban growth, arguing that water availability must be a binding criterion for new territorial developments. They have also proposed progressive tariffs for large consumers to manage demand more effectively.
