Balearic Islands water scarcity and contamination crisis

Overview

The Balearic Islands are facing intensifying water scarcity and management crises. While previous assessments identified nitrate pollution and aquifer over-exploitation affecting over 145,000 residents, recent data highlights worsening contamination and drought conditions.

In Ibiza, an annual report from the Alianza por el Agua revealed that all eleven wastewater treatment plants received influent exceeding legal limits at some point in 2025. Approximately 40.1% of the island’s total wastewater flow was non-compliant, the highest rate in the archipelago. Although the new Sa Coma treatment plant reached 88.8% compliance, the project was marked by a nearly twenty-year delay between its 2015 tender and 2024 completion.

Regional drought conditions have also deteriorated. By August, total water reserves fell to 38%, down from 40% the previous year, following a 55% precipitation deficit compared to the climatic average. Consequently, 37.6% of the territory is under drought alert, 60.8% is in pre-alert status, and only 1.6% remains in normal status, with Formentera being the only demand unit to maintain normal conditions.

In Menorca, environmental challenges have intensified. Following an extremely warm and dry August, water reserves on the island have dropped to 33% after a 62% precipitation deficit during that month, maintaining a pre-alert scenario. Furthermore, extreme heat alerts have been issued for the island, with maximum temperatures expected to reach 36 degrees Celsius.

Management challenges persist in Menorca, where wastewater reuse remains below 8% due to salinity issues in purification plants. In Mallorca, political groups like Més per Mallorca continue to criticize the regional government for inadequate drought preparation, advocating for stricter limits on urban growth and progressive tariffs for large consumers to manage demand.
