Balearic Islands triples torrent maintenance investment to 17.1 million euros

The Government of the Balearic Islands has tripled its investment in the maintenance and conservation of torrent networks, reaching a total of 17.1 million euros. This initiative aims to protect towns, neighborhoods, and families from the risks posed by intense rainfall and flooding.

For 2026, the plan includes 103 interventions across 34 municipalities in Mallorca, Menorca, and Ibiza, covering more than 63 kilometers of torrents. The works involve clearing vegetation, removing debris, eliminating invasive species, and repairing dry stone walls to ensure efficient water flow.

In Menorca specifically, recent actions have already addressed over 1,600 meters of torrents, including the Vergers de Sant Joan in Maó and the Puntarró-Santa Catalina-na Vermella area. Additionally, the government has increased aid for agricultural and livestock holdings to over 900,000 euros to meet high demand for cleaning torrents located on private lands.
