Balearic Islands unemployment rises amid migrant regularization

The unemployment rate in the Balearic Islands rose by 1.9% in September, marking the first year-on-year increase since May 2021. Authorities, including Labor Minister Catalina Cabrer, attribute this shift to the impact of extraordinary migrant regularization processes. As more regularized individuals enter the labor market and complete seasonal contracts, they are appearing on official unemployment lists.

While the archipelago saw a total of 26,547 unemployed persons, Menorca stood out as the only island to buck this trend. In Menorca, unemployment decreased by 4.5% compared to the same month last year, totaling 1,596 people. The island also experienced a 13% increase in new employment contracts during September, with significant growth in hiring non-EU foreign workers.
