Migration and labor trends in the Balearic Islands
Overview
In the Balearic Islands, recent reports have highlighted the significant role of migration in the regional economy. An Economic and Social Council (CES) report noted that nearly 29% of the population consists of regular migrants, primarily concentrated in the tourism, construction, and primary sectors. The CES stated there was no evidence that immigration displaces local workers or causes disproportionate use of public services, though it called for increased investment to address declining social tolerance.
By September, the archipelago’s unemployment rate rose by 1.9%, the first year-on-year increase since May 2021. Labor Minister Catalina Cabrer and other authorities attributed this rise to migrant regularization processes, noting that as regularized individuals complete seasonal contracts, they appear on official unemployment lists. While most islands saw increases in unemployment, Menorca experienced a 4.5% decrease in unemployment and a 13% increase in new employment contracts, driven largely by hiring non-EU foreign workers.
