Balendra Shah's Nepal Government Faces Widespread Protests from Teachers, Farmers and MPs

Since taking office, Prime Minister Balendra Shah’s administration has been hit by a wave of demonstrations across Nepal. Teachers, health‑care workers, civil servants, farmers, squatters and business owners have taken to the streets demanding faster action on education reforms, land policy, employment guarantees, social security and broader economic measures. The Nepal Teachers’ Association is calling for the immediate enactment of the School Education Act and for better salaries, permanent posts and benefits for early‑childhood and grant‑based teachers, accusing the government of inadequate budget allocations and restrictive transfer rules.

In the National Assembly, Janata Samajwadi Party MP Mahantha Thakur labeled Shah a “Nepali Hitler,” condemning what he described as an inefficient, authoritarian style that has dismissed officials, targeted party offices and threatened trade unions and student groups. Thakur warned that strict policies toward boarding schools and nursing homes could further damage education, health services and the country’s economy.
