Indonesia's MBG Program Faces Funding, Implementation and Expansion Debates

The government’s free nutritious‑meal scheme (Makan Bergizi Gratis, MBG) is being rolled out nationwide with a budget that reached Rp 852.75 billion in Bali alone and a total allocation of Rp 88.15 trillion by May 2026, after an earlier cut from Rp 335 trillion to Rp 268 trillion. Officials acknowledge the rollout was rushed; Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan said, “Saya yakin, dalam enam bulan, satu tahun ke depan, pasti akan jauh lebih baik.”

Implementation challenges include uneven kitchen distribution—most facilities are on Java— and data‑quality issues, prompting calls for phased execution and stricter oversight. Muhaimin Iskandar stressed a new focus on “ibu hamil, ibu menyusui, balita” as the priority groups, saying “saya melihat skala prioritas … itu skala prioritas yang paling tepat.” The Health Minister proposed extending MBG to TB patients, prompting DPR member Charles Honoris to caution, “Jangan semua‑semua MBG lah.” A separate DPR proposal seeks to include teachers as beneficiaries.

Local support is evident in mass demonstrations in Depok, Mojokerto, and other regions, where communities applaud MBG’s economic spill‑overs. Meanwhile, a draft presidential regulation plans to embed artificial‑intelligence tools in MBG operations, with the government estimating a 12 % GDP boost by 2030. The program’s success now hinges on improving governance, expanding reach to remote 3T areas, and reconciling budget constraints with the goal of reducing stunting nationwide.
