Indonesia MBG program faces mass poisoning and scrutiny
Overview
The food safety crisis surrounding the free nutritious-meal (MBG) program has intensified. By early September 2026, the civil society coalition MBG Watch estimated approximately 45,000 poisoning cases across 36 provinces. In Pati Regency, suspected victims reached 424, while in Berastagi, a student reportedly suffered seizures and memory loss. Laboratory tests have identified contaminants including Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus, and E. coli.
In response, the National Nutrition Agency (BGN) has temporarily suspended 1,999 nutrition service units (SPPG) for failing to register mandatory Hygiene and Sanitation Feasibility Certificates. The BGN has also issued new dietary guidelines, banning flavored and condensed milk in favor of high-quality UHT or pasteurized animal milk. To refine the program, the BGN removed 1,653 educational institutions—primarily international private schools—from the beneficiary list.
Legal and administrative pressure is mounting. In North Sumatra, 60 parents filed police complaints following mass illnesses in Karo. Legal experts have called for criminal sanctions rather than mere administrative penalties, suggesting investigations should link food safety negligence to potential budget misappropriation. Meanwhile, the Indonesian Pediatric Society (IDAI) recommended transitioning the program to school-based canteens to improve hygiene. Despite these measures, the BGN faces criticism from MBG Watch, which characterized the agency’s technical solutions as ‘gimmick’ responses that fail to address root causes. Coordinating Minister for Food Zulkifli Hasan admitted to implementation failures, prompting a management overhaul.
