Indonesia MBG program faces mass poisoning and scrutiny

To refine the program, the BGN removed 1,653 educational institutions—primarily international private schools—from the beneficiary list.

Legal and administrative pressure is mounting. In North Sumatra, 60 parents filed police complaints following mass illnesses in Karo. Legal experts have called for criminal sanctions rather than mere administrative penalties, suggesting investigations should link food safety negligence to potential budget misappropriation. Meanwhile, the Indonesian Pediatric Society (IDAI) recommended transitioning the program to school-based canteens to improve hygiene.
