Turkish cities celebrate 104th anniversary of liberation from occupation

Various cities across Turkey are celebrating the 104th anniversary of their liberation from enemy occupation during the Turkish War of Independence.

In Balıkesir, celebrations included the traditional ‘Tülütabaklar’ ritual, where participants dress in animal skins and use soot to mimic the appearance of local militia who once used such disguises to deter occupying forces. Local officials have also called for the city to be awarded the Independence Medal in recognition of its role in the national struggle.

In Aydın, ceremonies featured cannon fire and tributes to local heroes such as Yörük Ali Efe and Çete Ayşe. Similarly, in Bursa districts like Yenişehir and İnegöl, events included historical reenactments, Mehter band performances, and parades to honor the resistance of the Kuva-yı Milliye.

Other regions, including Kuyucak and Söke, marked the occasion with wreath-laying ceremonies, poetry readings, and traditional folk dances. While these anniversaries are significant local cultural events, they are not national holidays; for instance, in İzmir, schools and businesses continue regular operations on September 9th.
