Germany to build its largest battery storage plant in Klostermansfeld

The German grid operator BW ESS will begin construction of a 1 GW battery facility in Klostermansfeld, Saxony‑Anhalt, slated for commissioning in 2028. The plant will store up to 5 700 MWh of electricity, enough to power roughly three million households for four hours, and is projected to lower electricity prices, saving taxpayers billions of euros. BW ESS expects to profit by buying power when excess generation drives market prices to near‑zero and selling it back during high‑price periods, while also supporting grid frequency and voltage stability.

Separately, the Bundesnetzagentur missed the June 30 deadline for publishing the market‑integration framework for electricity storage and charging points (the “Mispel” rule) stipulated by the Renewable Energy Act. The industry association BVES highlighted the delay, warning that it hampers the rapid scaling of batteries that are essential for system flexibility and supply security as renewable penetration grows.
