Baltic countries accelerate defense tech development after Ukraine war

The war in Ukraine has reshaped the defence industry in the Baltic states. In Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia a wave of startups is creating advanced systems such as GPS‑independent drone guidance and remote‑controlled combat vehicles. Lithuanian entrepreneur Rapolas Markevicius founded Pdkinematics, which builds precision‑guidance kits for drones that can operate despite GPS jamming, while Luna Robotics develops testing platforms used by Ukrainian and NATO soldiers. Estonia’s Telearmy has adapted a former car‑sharing technology into a remote‑control kit for wheeled and tracked combat drones, armored trucks and mobile decoys.

Governments are backing the effort: Lithuania now allocates 5.3% of its GDP to defence, the highest share among NATO members, and regularly opens airspace and training grounds to young firms. The equipment is already being supplied to Ukraine and other European allies, attracting foreign investors. Analysts acknowledge the rapid innovation improves resilience against Russian aggression, though they caution that a handful of startups cannot alone halt a large‑scale offensive.
