Ukraine and NATO defense tech initiatives

Overview

In late July 2026, Ukraine and NATO launched the UNITE‑Brave grant programme, offering €10 million in matched funding for joint Ukrainian‑NATO projects to develop counter‑drone and air‑defence solutions. The call required partnerships between Ukrainian firms and NATO‑member companies and set a deadline of 3 August.

Within days, the Baltic states reported a rapid expansion of defence‑technology activity spurred by the conflict. Start‑ups in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia began producing GPS‑independent drone‑guidance kits, remote‑controlled combat vehicles and adapted car‑sharing tech for military use. National governments, notably Lithuania with a 5.3% GDP defence budget, provided backing and access to training grounds, enabling the equipment to be supplied to Ukraine and other European allies.

By late August, the wartime environment emerged as a significant incubator for rapid technological development. In June, the Ukrainian Brave1 cluster reported that MaXon Systems developed a system designed to automate approximately 95 percent of the interception process for Russian Shahed-type attack drones. Tested in the Kharkiv region by the B12 unit of Ukraine’s 12th Special Purpose Center, the system connects to a radar network to allow an operator to authorize an automated strike. While the interceptor drone autonomously navigates to and identifies the target, human operators retain the ability to abort attacks. Although MaXon Systems reports increased confirmed hits, public data regarding long-term reliability under electronic warfare remains limited.
