Baltic electricity prices fluctuate amid renewable energy growth

Electricity prices in the Baltic region have experienced significant fluctuations driven by renewable energy production and grid maintenance. In one recent week, average prices in Latvia dropped by 23% to 95.83 EUR per MWh, while prices in Lithuania and Estonia fell by 22% and 16% respectively. This decline was largely attributed to increased wind and solar energy generation across the Nord Pool region.

However, price volatility remains a concern. Energy company Enefit noted that the risk of price increases is currently higher than a year ago, with future dynamics heavily dependent on hydroelectric and wind production in the Nordic countries and weather conditions. Despite a 43% increase in solar and wind energy production this summer compared to last year, average Baltic electricity prices were 34% higher than the previous year.

Grid maintenance also impacted regional pricing. Scheduled repairs on the Estonia-Latvia interconnection and the Estlink-1 cable between Estonia and Finland limited the ability to import cheaper electricity from Finland, which helped constrain the extent of the price drops in the Baltic states.
