Baltic Shipping Company adds wind-assisted hybrid coasters
Danish shortsea operator Baltic Shipping Company A/S has added two new Damen-built hybrid coasters, M/VBaltic Iron and M/VBaltic Timber, to its fleet. Both 3,550 DWT vessels are designed for European shortsea trades.
The vessels feature wind-assisted propulsion via two Econowind VentoFoils, which are expected to reduce fuel consumption by up to 12% by generating aerodynamic thrust. Additionally, the ships are equipped with large battery packs, making them hybrid vessels intended to improve energy efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions.
M/VBaltic Timber was the first to enter service, followed by its sister vessel M/VBaltic Iron. Both are currently in commercial operation. Baltic Shipping Company manages or charters approximately 95 dry cargo vessels.
