Adoption of wind-assisted maritime propulsion

Overview

Shipping companies are increasingly adopting wind-assisted propulsion technology to improve fuel efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions.

German shipowner Leonhardt & Blumberg has begun equipping a new fleet of four general cargo vessels with Econowind VentoFoils. The first vessel, the HANSA DREJOE, completed installation in early August, while the HANSA CHRISTIANSOE is undergoing the process. Econowind estimates these foils will provide approximately 10 percent additional thrust based on annual trading routes.

Similarly, Danish operator Baltic Shipping Company A/S has added two Damen-built hybrid coasters, the M/VBaltic Timber and M/VBaltic Iron, to its fleet. These 3,550 DWT vessels utilize two Econowind VentoFoils, which are expected to reduce fuel consumption by up to 12 percent. These ships also feature large battery packs to function as hybrid vessels.
