Baltic region hit by powerful cyclone, killing two and causing mass power outages
A powerful cyclone has struck the Baltic region, including Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, and northeastern Poland, resulting in at least two fatalities and widespread infrastructure damage. In Lithuania, one person died after being struck by a falling tree in the village of Mazionys. In Latvia, a second man was killed when building debris collapsed on him in Jelgava.
The storm caused massive power outages, affecting hundreds of thousands of people. In Latvia, approximately 277,000 customers lost electricity, with significant damage to high-voltage power lines and substations. In Lithuania, over 200,000 residents were without power. In northeastern Poland, more than 100,000 households were also affected.
Extreme weather conditions, including wind speeds exceeding 108 km/h (67 mph) in Riga and gusts up to 31 m/s, led to heavy flooding and significant disruptions to transport. Road, rail, air, and maritime services were impacted, with Riga airport reporting potential delays and rerouted flights. Meteorologists noted that the storm was among the most destructive to hit Latvia since 2005.
