Lithuania state of emergency: storm recovery and crop loss

Overview

Following the severe storm in late August 2026, the Lithuanian government has declared a state of emergency. This data will be used to determine if a formal request for aid should be submitted to the European Commission.

Recent assessments indicate severe agricultural impact, particularly in Western Lithuania, where crop losses are estimated between 30% and 60%, potentially affecting 56,000 hectares. Farmers are now facing additional uncertainty due to waterlogged fields, which threatens both the harvesting of current crops and the timely sowing of winter crops. To mitigate immediate pressure, the Ministry has indicated that sanctions will not be applied to producers unable to meet certain strategic plan requirements due to the August 22 weather events or related power outages.

Utility recovery is ongoing. ESO has formalized its compensation scheme for private customers facing outages longer than 72 hours. Civil protection specialists continue to emphasize proactive preparedness, advising citizens to maintain essential supplies as extreme weather often simultaneously disrupts electricity and water services.
