Mine workers end protest after reaching agreement on unpaid wages
Miners from Doruk Madencilik and Eti Gümüş, subsidiaries of Yıldızlar SSS Holding, have ended an 18-day protest in Ankara after reaching an agreement regarding unpaid wages and severance pay. The union announced that an agreement was reached to pay the outstanding claims in four installments over a 40-day period, with an initial payment of approximately 8 million lira already processed.
During the protest, Bağımsız Maden-İş union leaders Gökay Çakır and Başaran Aksu were arrested on charges of “inciting hatred and hostility” related to their social media activity. The arrests drew widespread condemnation from opposition parties and human rights groups, who characterized the legal action as an attempt to silence labor rights advocacy.
While the workers reached a settlement, the company has previously faced significant administrative fines exceeding 23.5 million lira for labor law violations and failure to meet collective bargaining agreements.
