Turkish miners' unpaid wages protests
Entities: Doruk Madencilik · Talih Kocabıyık · Nurettin Akçul · Yıldızlar SSS Holding · Turkish Mine Workers Union
Overview
The protest movement over unpaid wages at Doruk Madencilik has persisted into early August 2026. After ten days of sit‑ins in Ankara, Doruk Madencilik workers reported that only a portion of salaries had been received and that many of the roughly 580 employees were still awaiting severance and notice‑pay. Union officials warned they would begin a hunger strike next week if the outstanding amounts were not paid, urging company owner Erdinç Bey and the president to intervene.
In parallel, employees of Gersan Elektrik staged demonstrations over delayed bonus payments and a reduction in a bank‑promotion rate that they say has worsened their financial situation amid high inflation. The promised July 2026 bonus, originally to be paid in three installments, was only partially delivered, and the promotion rate was lowered from 1.70 to 1.33 and then applied at 1.29. Workers also cited strict production monitoring and other working‑condition grievances.
Both groups have joined earlier protests that began with a roof collapse in Zonguldak and spread to multiple mines, where miners have faced months‑old salary arrears, severance delays, and confrontations with police. The broader labor unrest continues to pressure the Ministry of Energy and the companies involved, with threats of further sit‑ins, hunger strikes, and marches if payments are not resolved.
