Banana industry faces growing global supply chain pressures

The global banana industry is facing significant supply chain pressures due to a combination of environmental, biological, and logistical challenges. While current supply meets demand, producers warn that maintaining reliability is becoming increasingly difficult and costly.

Climate change is a primary concern, as unpredictable weather patterns—including the effects of El Niño and La Niña—cause extreme variations in rainfall, temperature, and water availability. These fluctuations impact fruit quality, productivity, and the management of diseases. Specifically, the spread of the TR4 disease has reached 26 countries, including Ecuador, the world's leading exporter, potentially threatening 100 million tonnes of production.

Logistical disruptions further complicate the sector. Fluctuating water levels in the Panama Canal affect navigation, while conflicts in the Red Sea and Middle East cause port congestion and force longer shipping routes. These factors reduce container availability and complicate trip planning for operators, adding further strain to the distribution of this highly perishable fruit.
