Global banana industry supply and market pressures
Overview
The global banana industry is experiencing significant supply chain and economic pressures driven by environmental, biological, and geopolitical factors.
Climate change, specifically unpredictable weather patterns like El Niño and La Niña, continues to impact fruit quality and productivity. The spread of the TR4 disease to 26 countries, including Ecuador, poses a major threat to production volumes, potentially affecting 100 million tonnes of production. Logistical hurdles, such as fluctuating water levels in the Panama Canal and conflicts in the Red Sea and Middle East, have complicated shipping routes, increased port congestion, and reduced container availability.
As these pressures persist, the market is seeing shifts in pricing and production strategies. Fairtrade International has announced minimum price increases effective January 1, 2027, with an average increase of 5.6% at the Ex Works level and 3.9% at the FOB level to address rising costs for fuel, fertilizer, and packaging. In Ecuador, industry leaders are advocating for fair pricing to support the livelihoods of approximately 250,000 workers.
Regional production trends vary. In Colombia, the exporter Uniban is expanding into the Córdoba department with a 700-hectare project to boost productivity despite Fusarium R4T threats. Conversely, while Cameroon has seen a 21.5% rise in export volumes through September 2026, major exporters like Plantations du Haut Penja face profitability challenges. Chiquita Brands International CEO Carlos López Flores has warned that extreme weather and geopolitical disruptions could lead to lower sales volumes and higher consumer prices through 2027.
