Europe addresses economic and environmental impacts of food waste

Europe faces significant economic and environmental challenges due to food waste. Across the continent, approximately 59.2 million tons of food are discarded annually, resulting in economic losses estimated at €132 billion. This waste also contributes to substantial methane emissions and represents a loss of the land, water, and energy used during production.

At the Climate Change Summit 2026 in Bucharest, FEBA CEO Esteban Arriaga highlighted that food loss and waste account for 12% of agricultural water use and 16% of greenhouse gas emissions in the EU. While the EU has pledged to reduce food waste by 30% by 2030, experts suggest that legislation alone is insufficient. Transitioning from a linear ‘take, make, dispose’ model to a circular economy—where waste is treated as a resource—is considered crucial for maintaining European competitiveness and meeting climate goals.
