Global food waste economic and environmental impacts

Overview

Food waste is a significant driver of economic loss and environmental degradation globally. In Australia, annual food waste is estimated at 7.6 million tonnes, causing an economic loss exceeding A$36 billion, with approximately 70% of this waste remaining edible. The hospitality sector is a major contributor, with individual businesses losing an average of A$66,000 annually due to spoilage and poor inventory management.

In Europe, the scale of the issue is even larger, with approximately 59.2 million tons of food discarded annually, resulting in estimated economic losses of €132 billion. This waste contributes to substantial methane emissions and represents a loss of the land, water, and energy used during production. At the Climate Change Summit 2026 in Bucharest, FEBA CEO Esteban Arriaga noted that food loss and waste account for 12% of agricultural water use and 16% of greenhouse gas emissions in the EU.

While the EU has pledged to reduce food waste by 30% by 2030, experts suggest that legislation alone is insufficient. Transitioning from a linear ‘take, make, dispose’ model to a circular economy—where waste is treated as a resource—is considered crucial for maintaining European competitiveness and meeting climate goals. Beyond direct financial costs, the waste of food involves the loss of extensive resources used throughout the entire lifecycle of a product, including soil, water, energy, fertilizers, pesticides, machinery, and labor.
