Banana prices face potential increases due to weather and geopolitical risks
The global banana industry is facing significant economic pressure that could lead to higher consumer prices. Chiquita Brands International CEO Carlos López Flores warned that extreme weather conditions, specifically the El Niño phenomenon, and geopolitical disruptions are driving up production costs. The CEO predicts a challenging period for the industry through the end of 2026 and into 2027, potentially resulting in lower sales volumes and higher costs for consumers.
Contributing factors include rising expenses for fuel, fertilizer, and packaging, alongside plant diseases such as Fusarium Tropical Race 4 (TR4). In response to these rising costs and the impacts of climate change, Fairtrade has announced an increase in minimum prices effective January 1, 2027. These adjustments include an average increase of 5.6 percent at the Ex-Works level and 3.9 percent at the FOB level to help producers manage the growing costs of production and logistics.
