Bananas, apples and tomatoes should not be stored in the fridge
Experts quoted by the British *Express* and working with retailer Aldi say that some fruits emit ethylene gas while ripening. The gas accelerates the spoilage of nearby produce, so mixing items in the same refrigerator compartment can cause faster decay.
They recommend keeping ethylene‑producing fruits such as bananas, apples and tomatoes apart from ethylene‑sensitive produce like berries, grapes and cherries. Wash delicate berries only just before eating, avoid pre‑cutting fruit, and re‑hydrate slightly wilted vegetables by trimming the ends and soaking them in cold water. The guidance is aimed at extending freshness and reducing food waste during warm weather.
