Pix: Central Bank of Brazil plans international expansion and new features

The Central Bank of Brazil is advancing a strategy to internationalize its instant payment system, Pix. According to the Pix Management Report 2023-2025, the authority is exploring bilateral interconnections with foreign payment systems and participation in global multilateral hubs. These connections aim to reduce transaction fees, increase speed, and allow international remittances and purchases to be settled in local currency within seconds.

Beyond international expansion, the Central Bank is developing new functionalities, including offline contactless transactions and 'Pix Automático' to replace traditional direct debits. The bank is also studying the integration of Pix into the credit market, allowing businesses to use future Pix transaction flows as collateral for financing to reduce credit costs.

To enhance security, the bank is implementing measures to combat fraud, including a real-time machine learning-based fraud probability indicator. Additionally, a working group is addressing the misuse of the transaction description field, which has been used for threats and insults.

On the international stage, BRICS nations are also discussing ways to simplify cross-border payments through instant payment connections and central bank digital currencies. Meanwhile, UnionPay International is piloting a project to allow Chinese users to pay at Brazilian establishments using Pix QR codes.
