Banco Central do Brasil and ECB study Pix and TIPS integration

The Banco Central do Brasil and the European Central Bank (ECB) have launched a feasibility study to explore the integration of Brazil’s Pix instant payment system with the Eurosystem’s Target Instant Payment Settlement (TIPS) infrastructure. This study aims to evaluate the technical, operational, legal, and business requirements necessary for such a connection.

The potential integration is intended to facilitate faster, more efficient, and lower-cost cross-border transactions between Brazil and the Eurozone. If successful, the connection could allow for international remittances and purchases to be processed in local currency within seconds. This initiative aligns with the G20 Action Plan for Enhancing Cross-Border Payments.

Separately, the Banco Central do Brasil is implementing stricter controls over virtual assets. New regulations, set to take effect on October 1, 2026, will require the reporting of cryptocurrency transfers involving self-custodial wallets valued at US$ 10,000 or more to the Council for Financial Activities Control (Coaf). Additionally, cash foreign exchange operations of US$ 10,000 or more must be automatically reported. Virtual Asset Service Providers (PSAVs) are also required to formalize authorization requests with the central bank by the same October 2026 deadline.
