Banco Central updates Pix regulations for security and functionality

The Central Bank of Brazil has announced a series of regulatory updates for the Pix payment system aimed at enhancing security, expanding functionality, and refining institutional participation.

Key updates include the introduction of Pix Automático for salary accounts, scheduled to begin on July 1, 2027. Once implemented, this will be the exclusive method for sending Pix transfers from such accounts. Additionally, new rules for hybrid billing—combining traditional barcodes with Pix QR Codes—will take effect on February 1, 2027, to prevent duplicate payments.

To strengthen security, the Central Bank is clarifying responsibilities regarding fraud suspicion markings in the Transactional Account Identifier Directory (DICT). Financial institutions must now notify users of such markings and provide channels for review, which must be addressed within seven days.

Regarding institutional governance, the penalty for exclusion from the Pix system will now take effect immediately, replacing the previous 30-day grace period. Furthermore, institutions with over 500,000 active accounts may be exempt from mandatory participation if their business model does not justify the infrastructure requirement. The regulator also introduced immediate suspension for institutions undergoing extrajudicial liquidation.
