Banco de Brasília faces crisis as Lula refuses federal rescue

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has announced that the federal government will not provide direct financial aid to rescue Banco de Brasília (BRB) following a major crisis. Lula attributed the bank's instability to fraudulent operations involving Banco Master and previous local administrations, alleging that BRB acquired R$ 12 billion in non-existent securities.

In response, Federal District Governor Celina Leão has criticized the president's stance, arguing that the administration is not asking for a bailout but rather a federal guarantee to secure a R$ 6.6 billion loan through the Credit Guarantee Fund (FGC). Leão has also begun seeking alternative financing from international investors, including entities in the United Arab Emirates.

To bolster the bank's position, Leão has ordered four state-owned companies—Novacap, Terracap, CEB, and Caesb—to utilize their own resources within BRB, citing existing local laws. The dispute remains a significant political and economic issue in the Federal District as the government seeks to stabilize the regional lender.
