Banco de Brasília financial investigation

Overview

Initial reports emerged regarding Banco de Brasília (BRB) customers receiving alerts about unauthorized credit card purchase attempts, including high-value transactions. While users received security notifications from ‘BRBCARD – Prevenção’, there was no official confirmation of a widespread data breach at that time.

Subsequently, the Federal Police launched an investigation into suspicious transactions involving BRB and Banco Master. Investigators found that between January and May 2025, BRB transferred R$ 12.2 billion to Banco Master through the purchase of credit portfolios from a company named Tirreno, which allegedly lacked the financial history to support such volumes. The Federal Police suggest these operations were designed to provide liquidity to Banco Master during a financial crisis.

Evidence indicates that BRB proceeded with these disbursements despite internal warnings regarding fraud risks and documentation inconsistencies. Investigators also noted that 21 transactions were kept at exactly R$ 750 million to bypass the requirement for Board of Administration approval. In response, Supreme Court Minister Luiz Fux has requested official statements regarding a proposed R$ 6.6 billion loan to recapitalize BRB, while legal actions have been filed to ensure the FGC covers judicial deposits in the event of the bank's liquidation.
