BRB under investigation for R$ 12.2 billion transfer to Banco Master
The Federal Police (PF) has detailed a series of suspicious transactions involving the Banco Regional de Brasília (BRB) and Banco Master. Investigations reveal that BRB transferred R$ 12.2 billion to Banco Master between January and May 2025 through the purchase of credit portfolios from a company named Tirreno, which allegedly lacked the financial history to support such volumes. The PF suggests these operations were intended to provide liquidity to Banco Master during a financial crisis.
Internal documents and PF forensics indicate that BRB continued these multi-billion real disbursements even after internal reports flagged documentation inconsistencies and fraud risks. Investigators also identified a pattern where 21 transactions were kept at exactly R$ 750 million to remain under the threshold that requires Board of Administration approval, allowing them to be handled solely by the Board of Directors.
In response to the growing crisis, Supreme Court Minister Luiz Fux has ordered the federal government, the Central Bank, and the FGC to provide official statements within 15 days regarding a proposed R$ 6.6 billion loan to recapitalize BRB. Additionally, a popular action has been filed seeking to ensure that the FGC covers judicial deposits of up to R$ 250,000 in the event of BRB's liquidation.
