Banco de México introduces new rules for mobile bank transfers

Banco de México (Banxico) has issued new regulations to standardize and simplify electronic fund transfers via mobile applications. The measure, published in the Official Gazette of the Federation, aims to create a more uniform user experience across different financial institutions.

Under the new guidelines, mobile banking apps must follow a standardized four-stage process: user authentication, data entry, information verification, and operation result notification. To reduce errors caused by long sequences of digits, users will no longer be strictly required to enter the 18-digit CLABE or 16-digit debit card numbers. Instead, they can use alternative identifiers such as alphanumeric aliases, QR codes, or mobile phone numbers.

Specifically, users can associate the last 10 digits of their mobile number with level 2, 3, or 4 accounts to receive SPEI transfers, provided they expressly request the link from their bank. For level 1 accounts, the implementation of this feature will be at the discretion of each institution. Financial institutions have until December 14, 2026, to adapt their systems to these new provisions.
