Banco de Portugal Governor advocates for pension savings reforms
Álvaro Santos Pereira, Governor of the Banco de Portugal, has advocated for Portugal to adopt international best practices to complement the public pension system through increased long-term savings. Speaking in Bragança, Pereira emphasized the need to move beyond ideological debates and look toward successful models in other European nations.
He cited Sweden and Denmark as examples of countries that implemented pension reforms in the 1990s to strengthen individual savings mechanisms alongside public systems. This approach allows citizens to build additional retirement funds based on their specific risk profiles. Pereira also noted that Germany is currently debating similar reforms to enhance social security complementarity.
The Governor highlighted that as life expectancy increases, finding ways to finance longer lives is essential. He clarified that the goal is not to replace the public social security system, but to create mechanisms that reinforce personal income upon retirement.
