Portuguese social security reform controversy
Overview
Portugal's Minister of Labour, Solidarity and Social Security, Maria do Rosário Palma Ramalho, received the final report from the Working Group for Social Security Reform. Led by economist Jorge Bravo, the report provides proposals and an execution plan intended to ensure the sustainability of the Portuguese pension system. The minister described the reform as “very complex” and characterized the report as an “important independent technical contribution” for future policy discussions.
Following the report's release, the Bloco de Esquerda (BE) party challenged the findings. The party accused the government and the working group of using “creative accounting” and “torturing numbers” to suggest a deficit exists within the system. BE deputy Fabian Figueiredo argued that the report seeks to manufacture a financial gap to facilitate privatization and reduce workers' rights. The party has requested urgent hearings in the Assembly of the Republic to address these allegations of misleading financial reporting.
